Layout is one of my first loves in the world of graphic design; I never get tired of making words and pictures work together to evoke a response. I’ve worked on everything from magazine articles and cookbooks to directories and corporate proposals. If your content needs to make a distinct impression, I’d love to help! Here are a few of the different publication designs I’ve made.
For the last couple years I’ve worked on the Town of Devon’s summer program guide. The Town wanted to inspire enthusiasm for outdoor summer activities among families in the area, and released a variety of promotional items get folks excited for the season. The summer program was intended to create a nostalgic feel that reminded parents of “the good old days” and the memories they could create for their kids.
My second take on the guide followed a nostalgic look like the previous year; however, to mix things up, the horizontal layout was meant to subtly reference a vintage striped beach towel, with an actual towel texture used as a background for the text.
The Town of Devon was developing its parks, culture and recreation master plan, which required a lot of community engagement. I had the opportunity to design an overall look for the plan that was applied to all reports and communication pieces, including the above interim report. Over a period of months, the Town surveyed residents about Devon’s rec facilities and programming. This report presents the results and was circulated in the local newspaper as well as posted on the Town’s website.
Devon wanted their master plan “brand” to have a down-to-earth, home-grown feel that welcomed residents to participate in plan development. I used the old-fashioned football “game plan” markup to further the idea of a strategy that connects the folks of Devon to arts, culture, and recreation. Designing the report involved styling various graphs and charts to match the master plan brand, and generally making the content as friendly and graphical as possible.
My time in magazine publishing had me creating countless layouts for articles. I’ve become pretty handy at finding interesting ways to display information, as well as ensuring imagery supports and enhances the story being told. In the examples shown here, I made the imagery that accompanies each story or layout. However, it’s a treat to work with great photos when they’re available!
